A country's scientific and technological development depends on the National Innovation System, which comprises public and private institutions, universities, research centers, and other actors contributing to research and development. In Ecuador, an increase in certain innovation indicators is identified as of 2008; however, it is necessary to promote alternative mechanisms to promote social innovations that contribute in a practical way to the solution of the problems of the context; In this sense, we intend to raise the importance of the role of higher education institutions as agents of social transformation. From the substantive functions of teaching, research, and community engagement, universities must open their eyes to co-production processes that allow them to contribute in an integral way to the construction of relevant and contextualized science and technology.
