Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the emotional experiences of students during the pre- and post-lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions on the academic mobility process during the first and second semesters of 2022. The research is approached from the perspective of the sociology of emotions and investigates how the academic experience is permeated by different emotions that originated during the pandemic but extended into, permeated, and defined the post-lockdown period. Using a basic qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Guadalajara. Content analysis and triangulation with academic literature revealed that the emotional aftereffects of the pandemic impacted four crucial aspects of the mobility process: motivation to participate in the mobility program, academic performance, interaction with others, and culture shock. These factors represented significant challenges for the study group, reflecting how a global crisis can leave lasting effects even in contexts of opportunity such as international mobility.
