Abstract
This article examines some of the debates produced around the exhibition commemorating the Bicentennial, held at the National Museum of Colombia, in 2010. To the said finality, the text explores the place of the national museums in contemporary society, the way it has redefined the concept of nation, and the social and cultural role of museums in general. The text is divided into three parts. Part one deals with the history of the national museums and, in particular, the National Museum of Colombia. The second comprehends the challenges and adjustments in the Museum to address new ways of defining the nation. In the last part, there is a presentation of some advantages and difficulties that the analysis of representations presents when developing a critical posture on the nation and its history.
