Descalzos, cocolos y niñas de la caridad en Cuenca: cambios y continuidades en el régimen escolar, 1930-1945
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines how the principles of liberty and equality, proposed by the National State, were assimilated by catholic schools in the city of Cuenca in Ecuador. Through the analysis of two sources, fictional stories and oral testimonies, taken from people who studied in religious schools from 1928 and 1946, the article shows that in Cuenca liberalism was not perceived as an obstacle clased with the values of the traditional school regime. At the same time that discriminative social practices were maintained, some changes were introduced, especially in lower class women´s education, in the context of a local stratified society.
