Abstract

'!be construction of the national State involved the shaping of localíties and the diffusion of ideologies and national symbols. The local monographs transmitted these symbols with the primary aim of linking the various districts to the nation. The urban local expression was often converted into images of the progress and portraits of the local elite. The period of major production of these monographs -1920 and 1960- coincides with the boom of the regional press. This reveals that the natíonal symbols were spread with relative effectíveness during the period marked by the deepening of the polítical administrative division and the constitution of the local powers in Ecuador.
