Riobamba y el ferrocarril. Nuevas dinámicas de intercambio regional en el primer cuarto del siglo XX

Abstract
This artic1e analyzes the conflicts that the passage of the railway through Riobamba provoked. It describes the struggle for the rectification of the railway that linked the cities of Guayaquil and Quito, and underlines the local conflicts and aspirations related with the new means of transporto The study indicates the reactions of Riobamban public opinion exposed in its local press, and the positions
of both the government and the company that constructed the railway. In addition, it studies the consequences that stemmed from the passage of the railroad:
the expansion of the internal market as a result of the increase of interregional
trade, the development of the settlements situated along the route of the railway
and the acceleration of interchange of persons and goods.
