Abstract

A preliminary study of the demographic evolution of Guayaquil and Quito at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, based on the proto-statistical census carried out in both cities in 1899 and 1906 respectively. The conditions in which both censuses were conducted, the quantitative information that they offer and the gaps that are still present in demographic history are studied. The article stresses a comparative perspective between the two main cities of Ecuador. The composition of the population in terms of age groups, sex, occupation, marriage, birth rate, mortality and education is examined.
