Abstract
The research asesses the emergence of the city of Manta as the station, which links the region of Manabí with the world market in the 19th century. This economic region was integrated by a system of smaH localities, each of which fulfiHed a determined function. The port of Manta experienced a surprising takeoff due to the manufacturing boom of the straw hats and later, the agro-export boom of vegetable ivory and cocoa. FinaHy, the process of re-colonization by the white-mestizo groups and the segmentation of the space between the new immigrants and descendents of the old Indians are also studied.
