Abstract
This artic1e analyzes the urban setting, the economic dynamics and the social relations that characterized Guayaquil during the 18th century. The economic and productive development that the port city experienced was due to the fertility of its natural environment and to the possibilities of communication facilitated by the fluvial system of Guayas. The peculiarities of the social structure, the reIationships among the elite and the subordinate sectors, the políticaI administrative structure of the town council and the influence that this urban center exercised on the peopIe and parties located in its hinterland are also studied.
