Abstract

This essay analyzes certain norms dictated by the Crown in order to regulate urban life during the colonial periodo The article concentrates on sorne of the provisions that sought to restrain social disorder and maintain order and the norms of "good living." Below this perspective a number of cultural practices that becarne separated from these regulations, which include albazos and carnivals are analyzed. Many of these manifestations were perceived by the colonial power as traces of latent primitivism. Nevertheless, the carnival celebrations, among other practices, stubbornly refused to obey these regulations.
