La universidad terrateniente: biopolítica, poder soberano y resistencia indígena-campesina en las haciendas de la Universidad Central en la Provincia de Cotopaxi, 1930-1980
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article studies the constitution process, peak and dissolution of the haciendas, which were owned by Central University of Ecuador in the Saquisilí cantón, province of Cotopaxi, between 1930 and 1980. The study proposes that the
hacienda constituted a structure of power (bio-power) with a high degree of autonomy related to the laws and institutions of the State, submitted to the sovereign will of the landowner and managed by the lessee who often exercised a
despotic authority. The article emphasizes the resistance of the Indian people,
the participation of the left-wing in the criticism of the hacienda system and Central University’s reluctance to give back the land to the peasants.
