Abstract

This article explores the discourses of colonialism and nationalism in different countries and periods through the prism of gender in order to understand the requirements and assumptions as much as the contingency and contradiction inherent in such projects. It is based on offering critical postcolonial and feminist theory, particularly the powerful warnings –postulated by nuanced understandings of culture and power– that gender and sexuality varied the formation of colonialism and empire. A particular focus on cultural representation of the Nation, by elites of India and Mexico demystifies the Nation and exposes latent but strong ties that bind the nation’s colonial past with the national (“poscolonial”?).
