Abstract
Beginning with a retrospective of the colonial period, this article offers an overview of the water supply system in the city of Quito in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The author outlines the policies of municipal sanitation and public health and their impact on the domestic habits of the city’s residents. In addition, the article addresses urban growth in relation to the provision of potable water and population growth.
