Abstract

Taking as a case study the festivities in honor of the canonization of Raimundo de Peñafort in Quito in 1603, this article offers a reflection on Baroque culture in Spanish America from the point of view of the Monarchy. The text shows how local elites appropriated festivities organized in honor of the Catalonian saint for their own uses. The authorities in Quito used the celebrations in honor of Saint Raimundo as a political strategy to petition the Crown to abolish the punishment imposed on the city after the “rebelión de las alcabalas” (1593).
