Abstract
Se exponen las bases juri?dicas del sistema de instruccio?n pu?blica de la Repu?blica de Colombia en el Distrito del Sur. Tambie?n se consideran las acciones emprendidas por el re?gimen para ampliar la cobertura de la ensen?anza y para establecer una estructura educativa que, a la postre, fue la base del sistema educativo ecuatoriano durante el siglo XIX. El emprendimiento educativo se relaciono? con la necesidad del re?gimen de construir una ciudadani?a republicana sobre la base de la ensen?anza de saberes como la lectura y la escritura, que permitieron el conocimiento y la diseminacio?n de deberes y derechos.
