Abstract

On the centenary of the notable and prolific Uruguayan writer Mario Benedetti’s birth, this text traces his memory and contributions to twentieth-century Latin American literature. Like few others in the region, during his lifetime, this author earned the sympathy and respect of all and sundry, even when they did not share his ideologies nor political and literary views. Like few authors, he also succeeded in disseminating his vast literary production (more than eighty books of diverse genres) among many in Uruguay and the world at large.
