Abstract

This essay analyses the role of Brazil in the current process of South American integration. The author argues that Brazil’s new role is both cause and con-sequence of the country’s recent development of economic power, as reflected in the internationalization of Brazilian companies. The author shows that the convergence, during the nineties, of a series of factors had made possible the transformation of Brazil into the key actor of the formation of an integrated South American space, which manifests itself in the South American economy, infrastructure, and even military issues.
