Abstract

Ponce comments and reflects upon writer Francisco Proaño Arandi’s fifth novel, El sabor de la condena, published by Editorial El Conejo in Quito, 2009. Ponce establishes some of the keys that shape this novel, in which Proaño stages once again the fixations that underlie his other  productions. The main characters, Javier and Male move around in a game of signs and symbols which allow the reader to grasp the mystery that constitutes their lives, which is, in turn, a continuous web of questionings and facades. As in most of Proaños’s fictional work, the world reduces to a house and  to an enigmatic and spellbinding city, Quito, which turns out to be a key referral point. In the words of Ponce, Proaño is faithful to his style and his already classic narrative concept that debates between dense and morose.
