Abstract

Through a critical examination of the story “El negro Santander” and of the book Yunga (1933) by Ecuadorian author Enrique Gil Gilbert, member of the renowned Generation of the 30’s, the text proposes a series of questions from which, in symbolic terms, reveals related to the idea of the nation, its exclusions, modernity and the presence of the Afro diaspora in Ecuadorian society. This essay sheds light, from a modern perspective, on one of the emblematic stories from Gil Gilbert’s work which is part of the narrative vanguard that occurred in Ecuador and Latin America in the 30s of the 20th century
