The story of Nay and Sinar by Jorge Isaacs and Sab by Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda: a counterpoint
Keywords:

In this paper, the author aims to collate the story of Nay and Sinar included in the novel María, by Jorge Isaacs (1867), with that of Bernabé in Sab (published in Madrid in 1841), by Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda. This exploration seeks, on the one hand, to create a counterpoint for both texts; on the other hand, it is proposed to review issues such as the construction of masculinity in the two texts, the antislavery position the same and Mother Nature as antagonist and adjuvant to the protagonists. To close this work, the author will apply a couple of ideas from Benedict Anderson trying to explain the following: characters of Isaacs and Gómez de Avellaneda come from a lost imagined community and they see in the impossibility to reproduce in a different context the boundaries of that kingdom that no longer exists or that there may not have existed since it was a part of the community’s imagination.
