Abstract

The author begins with the notion of Alfredo Pareja and the act of writing (she maintains that through his characters he was able to give lite to his ideas and polítical philosophy), and shows that a key example of this is the building of his character, the 'mulata' Baldomera. It reflects upon the author and his development of characters. Baldomera would become the metaphor for woman of the time, caught between submission and the search for independence; during this process she rebels, not against men, but essentially against her own body, against herself, clearly showing the double standards of patriarchal society, which seeks a woman's submission with violence. Therefore, «What does Baldomera represent? She is a
broken body -split, scarred and suffering-. An example of the obscenity of misery»
